1971 / 1972 Season

The club was now RYHOPE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION F.C. Obviously in print this was shortened to just Ryhope CA. As time passed the team was simply referred to as the ‘CA’.

Jimmy Clark and Norman T Taylor with their reduced work commitments were able to devote more time to the club and I could now go back to my minor role on the committee and enjoy playing football again.

Things were back to normal with the committee at full strength and the team took an enormous step forward with the signing of two exceptional players, Bobby Pickering and Billy Mitchell. Bobby was a bubbly character on and off the field and was probably the most well known and liked player in local football. Although  not the tallest defender he was still great in the air, a great tackler and was always cool in any situation. Billy came as a midfielder but could play anywhere. He was, without doubt, the most naturally gifted player ever to pull on a ‘CA shirt. As a result this was a great season and were League RU and winners of both the Seaham Aged Miners and Houghton Blind Cups.
