1977

1969 / 1970 Season

Another good season. We won the Seaham and District League, Seaham Aged Miners Cup and Bennison(Houghton Blind Institute) Cup. I was selected for the League team along with Brian Page, Harry Clark, Dennis Dugan, John Teasdale, Harry Orrell, Trevor Campbell and Ronnie Young. Ronnie I seem to recall had a great season and scored a lot of goals.

Although I scored 72 goals in 43 games I obviously had a dreadful end of season (see diary record). In the last 8 games I only played 6 of them and failed to score in any of them. Prior to these games all my goals came in 37 games, an average of nearly 2 per game. I would like to think I must have been carrying an injury because the alternative (playing rubbish and missing chances) just dosen't appeal at all. As I am looking for excuses I can always console myself by blaming lack of sleep draining me a bit after becoming a dad for the first time in March 1970.

I scored in 11 consecutive games which was a record I never ever matched during the rest of my career. On the other hand failing to score in 6 consecutive games was one record I would never want to beat.

This photo below has been very kindly 'tarted up' by the 'lads' from Sunderland RCA and it will be put on display, as a poster in the clubhouse, courtesy of Colin Wilson the 'RCA Secretary. It is great that Sunderland RCA are taking an interest in the clubs early years and is very much appreciated.

Players missing from the photo are Harry Clark and Dennis Dugan.

The photo below is courtesy of Dennis Dugan. I believe this photo was taken on 6th May 1970 and it was a game against the 'Rest of the League'. We were the champions but we lost the game 5-4. I was unavailable for this game and it's disappointing to be missing from this great photo.

The details below are a copy from my diary. I only wish I'd included all goal scorers like I did in the 1972/73 season.

In the second game of the season I came off when the score was 12-0 as it was too embarrassing and it stopped being fun. I could understand players in our team who very seldom scored getting a rare chance to get on the score sheet but the look on the opposition faces should have told the referee to finish the game well before the 90 minutes was up.

Below is a match report, courtesy of Dennis Doran, of the final of the Seaham Aged Miners Cup Final held at the Seaham CW ground against the very powerful Hartlepool Boys Welfare Old Boys side. This 5-3 win was the icing on the cake of a great season. Although it was a great team effort special mention must go to Ronnie Young and Norman Baird for their outstanding performances.

The pre match report below is courtesy of Brian Page and shows the team to play in the Murton Aged Miners Cup tie against Hartlepool OB on the first Saturday of the new year (1970).

Interleague games were played at the end of this season and if you were selected to represent the league you would have received the above letter and certificate from the league secretary, John Lowery.

Although the letter is a bit blurry there are 8 players in the squad from Ryhope YC
