1977

I played the full season for Ryhope 'Pops' and as this was in a Saturday morning league I was obviously available to play on an afternoon. This was one of the reasons why I was persuaded by Jimmy Clark, the YC's manager, to help him out. He wanted me to play centre forward so I was also a bit curious as to how I would handle that. My idea, at that time, of a centre forward was someone that was 6 feet tall, powerful, good in the air and could score goals. I had only one of these qualities but as I had a bit of pace and could use both feet I thought I had a chance of doing ok.

It was certainly a bit different but it started to work well because there were quality players in the side to give me the service that suited me. So I was lucky to have enough chances created to score goals. I've no idea how many I did score but there must have been enough to be wanted for the following season as a centre forward.

The team photo below was passed to me by Keith Hemborough and I cannot recall it being taken. The photo was taken at our home ground (Ryhope Colliery Welfare).
