Joe Dixon’s
Football Memories
1977
The team below represented the Sunderland Over 35’s League and was one of 68 teams entered into this mini World Cup competition held in Holland on the 17th and 18th May 1986.
Team manager was Gordon Howe
Considering that we were probably the oldest team, by several years, in the competition I suppose we did quite well as we were only knocked out after a penalty shootout.
Unfortunately 3 games against much younger players, 25mins each way, in a day proved to be just a bit too tiring.

These are 2 pages from the competition programme. The other pages I’m afraid I couldn’t understand. Team number 52 was another team from Sunderland but they were in another group and I can’t recall coming in contact with them.
Enschede is a town very close to the German border and just on the German side was a British military base. Because of Gordon Howe’s connections this is where we stayed.
Other than missing a penalty in the shootout I don’t remember much about the games. If anyone can help me with missing players names or anything about the games I’d love to hear from you.
